Dimitris Genias: the Gerakas Veterans since 1979 and his father at Panathinaikos
The captain of the Gerakas Veterans, Dimitris Genias, talks about the team that has existed since 1979 and about his father, Nikos Genias, who was registered with Panathinaikos in 1958.
Dimitris Genias, captain of the Gerakas Veterans, spoke to the camera of the Press League on Monday, October 5, 2026, during the friendly match with the S.P.A.E. M.M.E. Press Team at the renovated Gerakas stadium. His team has existed since 1979.
The team's old guard
Among the people who passed through the Gerakas Veterans, Genias mentioned the Stamatakis family of Ethnikos and Takis Eleftheriadis of Panathinaikos. He also spoke about Alekos Giannakopoulos, whom he described as a "Zajec-style" player. Alekos Giannakopoulos is the father of Stelios Giannakopoulos, a former Olympiacos player.
Nikos Genias: registered with Panathinaikos at 13
Most of the conversation went to his father, Nikos Genias, a “Saravakos-style” player, as he put it. Nikos Genias was registered with Panathinaikos in 1958, at the age of 13, along with Domazos. He played in the second team with the generation that later reached Wembley.
He did not make it to the first team. Haris Grammos was preferred for the position, and Nikos Genias was released in 1967.
